Parmi elles on distingue la gu�pe frelon et la G - u�pe commune la premi�re fait son nid � l'abri des vents et des grandes pluies soit dans les greniers, soit dans les trous des vieux murs mais le plus souvent dans de gros troncs d'arbres dont l'int�rieur est pourri. L�, ces insectes par viennent � faire une grande cavit� e d�tachant des frag mens d'un bois pr�t a tomber en po�'ssi�re. C'est au prin temps, que\les femelles apr�s avoir pass� l'hiver engourdies, et ranim�es par la chaleur de l'atmosph�re sortent de leur retraite_pour chercher un endroit convenable afin d'y �tablir le gu�pier. Ce lieu trouv� elles y posent les premiers fonde mens de l'�difice qui consistent en un pilier gros et solide, de m�me mati�re que le reste du nid mais beaucoup plus dur et plus compacte. Cette mati�re dont les gu�pes font usa�ge est l'�corce des menues branches de fr�ne qu'elles d�tachent 'par filamens_; ensuite elles la broient avec leurs mandfim1es pour en former une p�te qui se durcit apr�s qu'elle a-�t� mise en oeuvre; elles r�coltent en m�me temps une liqueur claire et 'sucr�e qui s'�coule des endroits nou vellement rong�s de la branche qu'elles ont d�pouill�e. Ce pilier est toujours plac� dans la partie la plus �lev�e de la vo�te, et les gu�pes - fielom y'attaehent _une esp�ce de calotte de m�me mati�re qui doit servir de toit � l'�difice et em p�_cher que les ordures guise d�tacheroient de la vo�te ne tombent sur les g�teaux. En dedans de cette vo�te elles posent un deuxi�me pilier, qui n'est en quelque sorte que la continuation du premier; c'est celui qui doit servir de' base au premier g�teau de cellules. Ces cellules sont hexagones et leur ouverture est tourn�e en bas. La m�re en construit quelques - unes. Comme on ne trouve au printemps que des femelles il est probable qu'elles ont �t� f�cond�es avant l'hiver ce qu'il y a de certain c'est que ces femelles com mencent leur ponte d�s qu'elles ont quelques cellules pour d�poser leurs oeufs. Ces oeufs ne tardent pas � �clore, et la m�re nourrit de sa chasse les petites larves qui en sortent. Quar�d celles-ci ont pris tout leur accroissement, elles ta pissent de soie leur cellule et la bouchcnt d'un couvercle de pareille mati�re. C'est sous cette enveloppe qu'elles su bissent leurs m�tamorphoses elles n'en sortent que quand elles sont devenues insectes parfaits. Ces gu�pes qui naissent les premi�res sont les ouvri�res; l'analogie porte � croire qu'elles sont comme dans les abeilles, des femelles d�pour vues d'ovaires; ce sont elles qui doivent s'occuper, de la construction du gu�pi'er et de la nourriture des larves. La femelle continuant � pondre, la famille augmente, et le logement devient tmp petit; alors les ouvri�res agrandissent l'enveloppe et le g�teau et quand celui - ei est pouss� jus qu'au bord de cette enveloppe elles en recommencent un, autre sur-le-champ. Ce dernier est attach� au premier par un ou plusieurs piliers; bient�t l'enve10ppe est achev�e et de nouveaux g�teaux *la remplissent; alors il ne reste plus qu'une ouverture au nid. Cette ouverture correspond � celle du trou qui est la porte par laquelle les gu�pes arrivent � leur nid elle n'a souvent qu'un pouce de diam�tre.
