Un accostamento alla prima trasposizione cinematografica dal romanzo "L'isola del dottor Moreau" di H.G. Wells: a questo auspica di pervenire il presente saggio, alla luce della duplice fiaccola alimentata dagli scritti di Lovecraft e Sade. Un interessante giudizio dell'autore americano sul film "Island of Lost Souls" offre l'avvio per un'esplorazione di quest'opera cinematografica e delle tematiche ivi presenti, nel tentativo di definire come la mostruosità degli esperimenti effettuati da Moreau si espanda e si aggravi rispetto a quanto descritto nel romanzo, originando un microcosmo in cui evoluzione regressiva, progresso degenerativo, sopraffazione colonialista e sfruttamento della forza lavoro sono mossi da una megalomane volontà di potenza aizzata da un erotismo crudele. Si giunge a ravvisare nel film una dislocazione dei punti di vista e l'andare alla deriva di un'identità confusa, ibrida: deriva che pare talora mettere in crisi lo stesso linguaggio cinematografico. Lo stupore che un film così eccessivo e consapevole di sé (in questo autenticamente sadiano) abbia potuto essere prodotto nella Hollywood del 1932 è pari alla meraviglia per il sobrio apprezzamento che Lovecraft espresse al riguardo ed allo sconcerto di fronte ad un'altra quasi contemporanea produzione che ad esso sembra morbosamente imparentata: "Murders in the Zoo". A questo secondo film è dedicata una specifica trattazione, cui seguono concise pagine sul più noto "Murders in the Rue Morgue", ove ritornano temi legati a degenerazione, ibridazione essere umano-animale e violenza, questa volta all'insegna di un mal concepito evoluzionismo.
