Caroline Rémy (1855-1929) eut une enfance morne et triste auprès de parents conformistes qui l'enjoignent de choisir entre devenir institutrice ou se marier avec un employé du gaz. Voulant s'affranchir de l'emprise parentale, elle opte pour le mariage, pensant accéder à une forme de liberté c'est un échec et le couple se sépare au bout de quelques mois. Elle rencontre par la suite Adrien Guebhard, professeur en médecine issu d'une riche famille suisse, qu'elle épouse en 1884 quand la loi Naquet autorisant le divorce lui permet de mettre fin officiellement à son premier mariage.

C'est à Bruxelles, en 1879, qu'elle fait la connaissance de Jules Vallès, alors en exil car proscrit pour son implication dans la Commune huit ans plus tôt. De cette rencontre naît une amitié sincère et décisive pour Caroline Rémy elle apprend avec lui non seulement le métier de journaliste mais découvre également la pensée socialiste et le militantisme. Ils vont à eux deux relancer Le Cri du peuple, un quotidien populaire d'extrême gauche fondé par Vallès et qui avait connu un énorme succès dans le Paris insurgé de 1871. Caroline Rémy signe d'abord ses premiers articles du nom de « Séverin », avant d'adopter défi nitivement celui de « Séverine » en 1883.

Après la mort de Vallès en 1885, elle reprend pendant un temps la direction du Cri du peuple, devenant ainsi la première femme à diriger un quotidien. Auteure très prolifi que, à la plume engagée et passionnée, elle signera plusieurs milliers d'articles au cours de ses nombreuses collaborations avec différents journaux. À partir de 1897, elle participe ainsi à une autre grande aventure éditoriale, celle de La Fronde, premier quotidien en France -- le second dans le monde -- à être entièrement administré et conçu par des femmes. Séverine donne voix à toutes les luttes contre les injustices dont sont victimes les femmes, emprisonnées dans le carcan d'une société conservatrice.

Notes d'une frondeuse est publié en 1894 et rassemble certains articles écrits par Séverine. Avec son acuité de journaliste, elle fait la chronique d'une époque marquée par le boulangisme, mouvement populaire du nom du général Boulanger qui, avec ses velléités antiparlementaristes, invectiva les institutions de la Troisième République, avant de se suicider en 1891 suite au décès de sa maîtresse. Cet ouvrage demeure encore aujourd'hui une lecture passionnante pour revivre cette fi n de siècle au plus près des événements.

Ce livre, réimprimé en fac-similé par Hachette-BnF, est identique à la publication originale de 1894 conservée à la Bibliothèque nationale de France.
