About the Book

-Need a crash course in retirement living and care options, because a family member needs more help than is available at home? -Making care arrangements for a loved one about to be discharged from the hospital? -Afraid you'll overlook something critical in planning to move from your home into a retirement community? -Refusing to consider a move to a retirement community because it seems too complicated to manage? -Overwhelmed by jargon and incomplete information about senior living and care options? -Wish there was an easy-to-read book that would explain this topic clearly so that you would know what to watch out for? -Trying to help others understand why it might be useful to consider moving to a retirement community and what it's like to live there? Not Your Grandmother's Nursing Home, a collection of forty articles from Elizabeth L. Bewley's weekly newspaper column "The Good Patient," appearing in the Prescott, AZ Daily Courier, is a treasure trove of insight about retirement living options, including both benefits and pitfalls. Some of the topics covered are: -Key features of arrangements for independent living, assisted living, nursing/skilled nursing and memory care (dementia care) in retirement communities, and what living in each is like -Costs for each type of living arrangement -Covering the costs of living in a retirement community -Features and costs for subsidized senior housing -Expert services available to help seniors manage a move from a home of many years -Getting medical and non-medical services without moving from your home -Getting help to declutter and improve safety without moving -Safeguarding the health of loved ones who live in assisted living or other types of care arrangements Bewley uses stories and vivid descriptions to bring facts and statistics to life, and includes extensive mentions of websites that highlight checklists, government and non-profit agencies, services and additional information to help you get results that may be spectacularly better than you ever thought possible for people seeking retirement living and care options.
About the Author: Bewley writes a weekly column called "The Good Patient" for the Prescott, AZ Daily Courier. In 2013, she published Not Your Grandmother's Nursing Home, a collection of forty columns written to demystify retirement living options including independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care (dementia care). The columns also address the costs of these options and how to afford them; other options such as subsidized senior housing; alternatives such as getting in-home services to meet medical, non-medical and safety needs; getting help from experts trained to move seniors with a minimum of disruption; and avoiding medical errors in assisted living and long-term care. In 2010, Bewley authored Killer Cure: Why health care is the second leading cause of death in America and how to ensure that it's not yours. Publishers Weekly declared Killer Cure "well written" and noted that it reflects "a genuine commitment to improving health care" and that it "offers excellent suggestions to patients." Bewley founded Pario Health Institute in 2008. She promotes change so that health care's purpose becomes "to enable people to lead the lives they want." Too often today, health care behaves as if its purpose is simply "to deliver tests and treatments." Previously, Bewley was an executive for 20 years with health care icon Johnson & Johnson. She won the Chairman's Award for her actionable strategic insights into the rapidly changing, volatile health care environment. She held leadership roles in operations, information management, process improvement, and strategy. She served on the management boards of two Johnson & Johnson business units, and oversaw initiatives with budgets of up to $200 million. Bewley has been recruited as both an advisor to and a speaker at national health policy conferences. She was recruited to serve on industry task forces of the National Quality Forum which published three CEO Survival Guides for hospital CEOs on the topics of Personal Health Records (PHR), performance measurement, and Pay for Performance (P4P). Bewley earned a bachelor's degree in Accounting and Finance from Excelsior College and an MBA from Columbia. She completed subsequent graduate work in health policy, and is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt. Her unwavering commitment to patient advocacy is informed both by her extensive study and by her own health care experiences -- including those related to a bicycle crash that occurred at 44 mph.
