Non faccio confidenze qui, non sono dell'umore giusto, preferisco parlare dei miei compagni che di me stesso. Ma per necessità, questi compagni hanno attraversato un universo e un tempo che apparteneva ad altri. Sono venuti alla luce quando il dopoguerra stava finendo, quando le illusioni aleggiavano al suono dei violoncelli ginevrini, scoprendo Parigi contemporaneamente agli incanti del cinema muto, il teatro nella sua vitalità, la poesia nella sua purezza, l'anarchia nel suo fascino, sono avanzati poco a poco verso un pianeta pieno di guerre possibili, verso l'esasperazione dei nazionalismi, verso l'oblio delle torri d'avorio e le preoccupazioni dell'arte pura. Le nostre scuole, le nostre riviste, le nostre case, i nostri viaggi, i nostri piaceri, non erano che le apparenze sin-golari, mi sembra, con cui ci veniva designato il nostro tempo. Descrivendoli nella loro particolarità, ho già l'impressione di dirigere uno scavo. Qualunque cosa ci riservi il futuro, non sarà più lo stesso per noi o per gli altri. La Spagna in guerra, la santa esaltazione dell'anno trionfale, appartiene al passato. La vita disinvolta di uno studente a Parigi, attraverso certi caffè, certi ristoranti, certi cinema, certi teatri, tutti trasformati o scomparsi oggi, appartiene al passato. I costumi effimeri, così difficili da ricostruire a memoria, le canzoni alla moda, i berretti della marina americana, le chitarre hawaiane, le cravatte di batik o di lana grossa, le melodie di Mireille, le favole, le danze delle Indie occidentali, la poesia pura, tutto questo, mescolato insieme, è storia. E il teatro non sarà più lo stesso per noi, poiché non leggeremo più l'articolo di Lucien Dubech su uno spettacolo di Georges Pitoëff, e poiché entrambi sono tornati in fretta e furia, nei primi giorni della guerra, nella terra delle immagini e dei fantasmi."
