Oktober 2006 schockierte die Demokratische Volksrepublik Korea (DVRK) nicht nur seine unmittelbaren Nachbarn, sondern auch die gesamte Welt. Gegen 12 Uhr Ortszeit verkündete das nordkoreanische Staatsradio, dass erfolgreich eine Atombombe gezündet werden konnte (vgl. Fritz 2010: 10). Die Bemühungen Nordkoreas ein eigenes Nuklearprogramm zu initiieren und durchzuführen waren seit Jahrzehnten bekannt und galten als mögliche Abschreckungsmaßnahme des ostasiatischen Staates gegenüber dem unmittelbaren Nachbarn Südkorea und dessen Verbündete Japan und den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika (USA). Dass die DVRK allerdings tatsächlich Nuklearwaffen produzieren und zünden konnte, überraschte einen Großteil der westlichen Welt. Nordkorea schaffte es durch diesen erfolgreichen Nukleartest, sich im exklusiven "Klub" der Atommächte neben den USA, Russland, China, Indien, Pakistan, Frankreich und Großbritannien zu etablieren. Doch warum strebte und strebt die DVRK überhaupt nach atomaren Waffensystemen? In dieser Arbeit soll mithilfe der Theorie des Neorealismus versucht werden, diese Fragestellung zu beantworten. Dabei wird als theoretische Grundlage die Konzeption des amerikanischen Politologen Kenneth N. Waltz (1979, 2000) verwendet. Das Kapitel zwei, welches den Neorealismus behandelt, untergliedert sich in zwei weitere Unterpunkte. Diese sollen die für die Theorie des Neorealismus entscheidenden Ebenen - Akteure, Strukturen und Prozesse - näher untersuchen. Im Anschluss an die Darlegung der neorealistischen Theorie nach Waltz (1979), sollen im Kapitel drei die strukturellen Veränderungen nach dem Ende des Kalten Krieges betrachtet werden.
