Si le poete des Dionysiaques affectionne particulierement la veine guerriere, il ne neglige pas pour autant la poesie amoureuse. En effet, l'essentiel des chants XXXIII a XXXV est consacre aux amours contrariees de Morrheus, l' Achille indien et de Chalcomede, la Bacchante au coeur d'airain . Dionysos est parti a la conquete des Indes, pays des confins et limite du monde pour les Grecs. A sa suite, une armee feerique, faite de Bacchantes et de Menades en furie, affronte sans relache les soldats indiens. Parmi eux, Morrheus, chef glorieux dont le poete realise une veritable aristie, comme le fit jadis Homere pour Achille et Diomede. Mais le valeureux guerrier est vaincu par une fleche a la blessure incurable, celle d'Amour. Nonnos mele a merveille poesie erotique et guerriere dans ce recit original qui tient autant du roman grec tel que nous le connaissons, par exemple, chez Achille Tatius, que de la poesie epique la plus pure. Notre edition, qui poursuit le long travail de publication des Dionysiaques, rassemble en un volume les chants XXXIII et XXXIV. La liste des editions ainsi que des ouvrages cites est donnee au debut du volume, qui contient en outre une etude detaillee des amours de Morrheus et de Chalcomede. Les sources possibles de l'episode sont proposees, tandis que les paralleles avec le roman grec sont longuement discutes. Un plan general est fourni et assorti de judicieuses pistes de lecture. Chaque chant est precede d'une notice qui lui est propre ainsi que d'un sommaire permettant de circuler aisement dans le poeme. Des notes accompagnent la lecture et sont developpees, en fin d'ouvrage, par des notes complementaires. Trois etudes, les jeux de l'amour , le racisme de Nonnos et de la virginite des Bacchantes sont donnees en appendice, ainsi qu'un Index Rerum notabilium en francais et en grec.
