Panopolis, actuelle Akhmim en Haute-Egypte, etait a la fin du IVe siecle de notre ere un centre impregne d'hellenisme, souvent ardent a defendre le paganisme contre la propagande chretienne. C'est la qu'est ne le poete Nonnos, qui vecut par la suite a Alexandrie. Bien que chretien, Nonnos fut certainement influence par les cercles intellectuels de la capitale de l'Egypte, qui furent l'un des derniers bastions du paganisme dans l'orient Romain. Cela peut expliquer qu'il ait compose une grande epopee a la gloire de Dionysos. Les Dionysiaques sont ainsi animees par une vraie foi paienne, faisant une place importante a l'orphisme, aux mysteres, a la magie et a l'astrologie.Les chants XIV a XVII du poeme, contenus dans le present volume, relatent une partie de la campagne de l'armee de Dionysos contre les Indiens, guerre qui sert de prototype mythique a celle d'Alexandre. Nonnos adopte dans son recit une esthetique baroque ou des episodes a thematique erotique et bucolique sont inseres dans le recit militaire. Ainsi, le chant XIV s'ouvre sur la fin du catalogue de l'armee de Dionysos et se conclut par le recit de la bataille du lac Astacide ou les Indiens boivent l'eau miraculeusement changee en vin. Le chant XVII est quant a lui centre sur la bataille du Taurus. Entre ces recits a tonalite epique, Nonnos intercale l'evocation de la passion d'Hymnos pour la Nymphe Nicaia au chant XV et l'amour de Dionysos pour la meme Nymphe au chant XVI. Nicaia, apres avoir rejete et tue Hymnos, succombe a l'ivresse du vin et s'unit au dieu dans son sommeil. Ces episodes amoureux ne sont pas sans rappeler Ovide ou Apollonios de Rhodes.L'edition des chants XIV a XVII des Dionysiaques dans la Collection des Universites de France comprend le texte grec de Nonnos accompagne de la traduction en francais de Bernard Gerlaud. Chacun des chants est precede d'une notice qui en resume le contenu tout en en precisant les enjeux litteraires.
