No todas las reinas tienen corona es una colección de veinticuatro relatos breves protagonizados por otras tantas mujeres. Cada relato está titulado con el nombre de la protagonista y cada una de estas mujeres nos muestra un retazo de vida. A través de la lectura, el lector se adentrará en la historia del último siglo, pues los relatos están ambientados desde principios del siglo XX -con extraordinarios retratos de la España rural- hasta la actualidad. Esta lectura nos permitirá observar la evolución de la condición femenina a lo largo de este período y ver distintos tipos de relaciones familiares, el valor de la amistad, diferentes facetas laborales, algunos aspectos de la emigración y de la inmigración, el amor apasionado y el desamor, el amor no correspondido y la infidelidad, el maltrato a las mujeres, la herida abierta del terrorismo, el deseo de maternidad, la importancia de la educación y de la instrucción, la solidaridad y el voluntariado en ONGs, las adopciones... En definitiva, un amplio mosaico que refleja a la perfección la variedad y la riqueza de la vida humana.
Las protagonistas de estos relatos son mujeres valientes, luchadoras, que en muchas ocasiones tienen que enfrentarse directamente con lo que el destino les había deparado. Sin embargo, no son relatos hagiográficos, porque estas mujeres no son santas, sino verdaderos seres humanos con sus contradicciones, sus limitaciones y sus verdaderas cualidades. Y entre tanto retrato encomiástico, también se cuela algún personaje malvado, porque como dice la propia autora "no todas las reinas son de corazones". A veces nos encontramos, en el libro y en la vida, con algunas "damas de picas".
En esta segunda obra publicada, tras la exitosa Cuando yo era orégano, la autora, María Vargas Arrabal, se nos muestra como una narradora inteligente, observadora, apasionada, con un dominio perfecto de la lengua. Unas veces una persona, otras una anécdota o, incluso, un determinado objeto son elementos suficientes para disparar la inspiración de la autora y tejer la trama de estas historias que rezuman verdad como la vida misma.
Además de la variedad temática, quisiera destacar la forma en la que está escrito porque, al fin y al cabo, de eso trata la literatura. Se trata de un libro muy bien escrito. El predominio de la narración sobre la descripción y el diálogo, con un estilo ágil, limpio y transparente, y el predominio de la frase breve dota a la obra de un lenguaje aparentemente fácil, pero que el lector agradece porque se lee con mucha facilidad, de un tirón.
Cada relato va acompañado de una ilustración que enriquece la historia y lo hace más atractivo. Además, el libro está magníficamente editado. En definitiva, un gran libro de una excelente narradora que se va afianzando en el difícil arte de contar y en el que seguro que el lector que se atreva a entrar va a encontrar una serie de historias para atesorar en su corazón.
