En la pequeña aldea de Affeln, en Renania del Norte, Alemania, los hermanos Hermann y Hubert Sasse ven pasar su niñez con aparente normalidad, pero es la década de los años treinta y Alemania se prepara para un periodo trágico en la historia de Europa. La vida del joven Hubert corre paralela a la historia del ciudadano alemán Josef Kaufer Zeller, un antiguo entrenador de fútbol que llega a un pequeño pueblo de pescadores, en España, para comenzar una nueva vida. Pero el bienestar no es más que pura apariencia. Josef se verá forzado a participar en la Guerra Civil Española. En aquellos años de duro combate vivirá un sinfín de experiencias que le llevarán a pensar en el porqué del atroz comportamiento de los hombres. Al finalizar la guerra, Josef regresa a casa para encontrar la pequeña población que le acogió, sumida en la destrucción. Llega 1940, y con apenas 19 años y en plena II Guerra Mundial, Hubert se ve obligado a vencer los miedos propios de un niño para ingresar en la Kriegsmarine, para posteriormente embarcar en la nave de guerra U-755. Allí descubrirá la verdadera dimensión de una guerra especialmente cruel y absurda, que llevará al joven a ocultar a los demás su propio miedo a perder su humanidad.Finalmente, los caminos de ambos hombres se unirán por un capricho del destino, y sus vidas quedarán entrelazadas para siempre. About the Author: La historia de Hubert Sasse llegó a la vida de José Barceló el año 2010, pero no fue más que eso, una historia más entre tantas otras. Con el paso del tiempo los hechos que rodearon el fin de la vida del marino se fueron diluyendo en su mente. Pero un tiempo después, por unos motivos u otros, la hermosa historia de solidaridad que nació entre Josef Kaufer y el marino volvía a cruzarse en su camino; nuevamente sin que él le prestara la atención debida. Hasta el año 2013, en que, nuevamente se dejó seducir por ella. Ocurrió un lejano día en que viajó expresamente para visitar su tumba. A partir de aquella mañana ya no pudo apartar de su mente el rostro de Hubert; un rostro que expresa nobleza y juventud. Una juventut que, como la de tantos miles de jóvenes, se vió truncada por haber nacido en una época muy dificil en la que los hombres no supieron amar lo suficiente y se dejaron llevar por la barbarie. Como si algo en su interior le dijera que debía contar dicha historia. Entonces conoció a Marta Kaufer, y una puerta se abrió, dando paso a un largo corredor que daba paso a otras puertas. El autor avanzó por aquel largo pasillo, llamando a aquellas puertas que fueron abriéndose, aportando nuevos fragmentos y retales de la historia. Como si la misma, al parecer, gozara de voluntad propia y él sólo se tuviera que dedicar a llevarla al papel. Transcurridos largos meses, aquel ingente trabajo de documentación acabó en un blog y con el paso del tiempo, el blog del Niño de la peonza vio crecer sus visitas hasta llegar a las 21.000 en sólo diez semanas.
