Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2008 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Region: USA, Note: 1,7, Universität Hamburg (Institut für Politische Wissenschaft), Veranstaltung: Öffentliche Meinung und der Einfluß der Massenmedien auf die politische Meinungsbildung, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Vor bald fünfzig Jahren, im Herbst des Jahres 1960, trafen zum ersten Mal in der Geschichte die beiden Kontrahenten um das Amt des Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten im amerikanischen Fernsehen zu einem Rede-Duell aufeinander. Es war das allererste Mal, dass eine solche Debatte über das noch junge Massenmedium Fernsehen übertragen wurde. In einer kleinen, aber sorgfältig durchgeführten Erhebung versuchte damals das Ehepaar Kurt und Gladis Engel Lang, den völlig neuen "TV-Event" und seine Wirkung zu untersuchen. Ihr Artikel "Ordeal by Debate: Viewers Reaction" wurde 1961 in der Fachzeitschrift Public Opinion Quarterly veröffentlicht. Sie legten damit eine der ersten Analysen über ein Phänomen vor, dass sich bis heute stetig weiterentwickelt hat und stets im Fokus kommunikationswissenschaftlicher Forschung blieb: TV-Duelle um das höchste demokratische Amt im Staat. Diese Arbeit wird den Weg jener Untersu-chung nachzeichnen und die wesentlichen Ergebnisse wiedergeben. Im Anschluss wird der Stellenwert dieser Arbeit im Kontext der Medienwirksamkeitsforschung ausgelotet. Ein kleiner Überblick über die Entwicklung dieses Forschungszweigs der empirischen Sozialforschung unterstützt diesen Einordnungsversuch.
