Aveva appena 15 anni Marietta quando mise al mondo la sua bambina nel carcere di Trini: stava scontando la pena per l'omicidio commesso nel suo paese a trecento chilometri di distanza, il tentativo mal riuscito di salvare il suo onore. La gioia per la scoperta di avere in grembo il frutto di ciò che credeva fosse amore, lasciò il passo al disonore, a drammi familiari, alla rabbia, fino alla decisione di vendicarsi nella maniera più inattesa. Quei tre colpi di pistola non avevano, però, spezzato la vita dell'uomo che l'aveva sedotta con le promesse: a restare a terra, fu un amico di quell'uomo. Fu arrestata, processata e condannata in pochi giorni ed inviata in un penitenziario distante dalla contrada. Lì, in carcere, nacque la bambina cui fu assegnato il nome di Carmela e le suore del penitenziario registrarono la sua nascita: 29 febbraio 1935. Una data inesistente, come le tracce di quella bambina che a due anni, quando già parlava correttamente il latino, fu affidata alla nonna mentre la madre continuava a scontare la pena, per poi morire il 25 dicembre 1939. Ma forse non era morta davvero. Finti funerali, preti scambiati per diavoli, alberi senzienti, una pistola che ha attraversato l'oceano, predizioni che si avverano, l'ubiquità di una madre: è questo lo sfondo nella ricerca di una bambina, per tutti "l'angelo della contrada", scomparsa lasciando numerose testimonianze contraddittorie sul suo destino. Morta appena nata, affidata all'insaputa della madre ad un'altra famiglia, portata via da uno straniero in bicicletta, morta la mattina di Natale del 1939, mai sepolta, mai nata: le testimonianze raccolte ricreano un clima indecifrabile e allo stesso tempo torbido di quegli anni, finanche ad arrivare all'ipotesi che la bambina abbia assistito al funerale dell'anziana madre, che si era rifatta una vita dopo essere uscita dal carcere, mischiata ai fratelli che non hanno mai osato chiedere di quel segreto di famiglia. Marietta, la madre, a sua volta aveva un rapporto inspiegato con la montagna che sovrastava la contrada in cui gli eventi si sono svolti, come se la natura l'avesse eletta a figlia, salvo poi ripudiarla. La donna rivide, forse, nel dopoguerra, l'uomo che l'aveva sedotta: era senza gambe, e faceva l'elemosina su un tram nella città in cui Marietta si recava per portare conforto al marito morente in ospedale. La contrada dista poche centinaia di metri dal paese di cui è parte, eppure appare un altro mondo rispetto a tutte le realtà circostanti, governato da antiche regole non scritte, dalla presenza costante di gatti, e da una fontana da cui promanano tutte le vicende belle e brutte che aleggiano ancora nell'aria in quel luogo.
