In seiner großen Nietzsche-Studie interpretiert Karl Löwith Nietzsches gesamte Philosophie als geschichtsphilosophischen Versuch, die Entstehung, Entwicklung und mögliche Überwindung des Nihilismus im abendländischen Denken zu beschreiben. Als Kern und Angelpunkt von Nietzsches Denken sieht Löwith dabei die Lehre von der ewigen Wiederkehr des Gleichen, mit der Nietzsche sein Ziel der Wiederherstellung eines antiken, dionysischen Lebensgefühls gegenüber christlicher Leidensmetaphorik verfolgt. Löwith zufolge mündet Nietzsches Philosophie jedoch in der Aporie, weil er den seiner Lehre immanenten Widerspruch zwischen dem endlichen Dasein des Menschen und der Ewigkeit der Welt nur mittels des Phantasmas des Übermenschen aufzulösen vermag und damit letztlich im Horizont christlichen Transzendenzstrebens gefangen bleibt.
About the Author: Karl Löwith wird 1897 in München geboren. Nach dem Besuch des Realgymnasiums beginnt er das Studium der Philosophie und Biologie in München, das er ab 1919 in Freiburg bei Husserl und Heidegger fortsetzt. Er promoviert 1923 bei M. Geiger mit einer Arbeit über Nietzsche und habilitiert sich 1928 bei Heidegger mit der Schrift Das Individuum in der Rolle des Mitmenschen. Löwith entwickelt hier die These, daß das menschliche Individuum in erster Linie in mitmenschlichen Rollen existiert. Auf Grund seiner jüdischen Abstammung von den Natinalsozialisten verfolgt, geht Löwith als Rockefeller Stipendiat 1934 nach Rom. Zwei Jahre später folgt er einem Ruf an die Universität Sendai in Japan. Hier entsteht auch sein bekanntestes Werk Von Hegel zu Nietzsche. Diese Studie zur Geschichte des deutschen Geistes im 19. jahrhundert sucht das Schicksal des Hegelschen Denkens zu erfassen: die Umbildung und Verkehrung der Philosophie des absoluten Geistes durch Marx und Kierkegaard und den Umschlag des geschichtlichen Denkens in das Verlangen nach Ewigkeit bei Nietzsche. Als deutscher Emigrant auch von Deutschlands Verbündeten Japan nicht mehr geduldet, siedelt Löwith 1941 in die USA über, wo er zunächst am Hartforder Theologischem Seminar und später an der New School für Social Research eine Anstellung erhält. 1952 folgt er schließlich einem von Gadamer vermittelten Ruf an die Heidelberger Universität, wo er bis zu seiner Emeritierung 1964 arbeitet. Karl Löwith stirbt 1974 in Heidelberg.
