La primera de ella es cuando Augusto, el personaje principal llega a conocer a Eugenia y comienza a conquistarla, ya que desde el momento en que la ve, comienza a preguntarse seriamente que es el amor, que es la vida, y comienza a idealizar la imagen de esta mujer, a la que solo ve sus ojos.La segunda parte es la convivencia que tuvo con Eugenia desde que comenzó a visitarla a donde ella vivía en casa de unos tíos y la forma en como este se desconcierta al estar enamorado de todas las mujeres en general. En esta segunda parte él se cuestiona sobre cómo vive. Tiene un perro de nombre Orfeo que será el único punto de desahogo de sus sentimientos y a Víctor Goti quien le habla sobre cómo crear el Nivola y de la miseria que puede llegar a ser la vida en un instante.La tercera parte corresponde al momento en que Eugenia lo engaña, y se escapa con Mauricio, haciendo del personaje principal una figura perdida, y también trata de como Miguel de Unamuno visita al personaje principal, lo que indica que el mismo es el propio escritor.Se establece que la obra transcurre en el año 1885, en la España de Alfonso XII, el cual estaba sufriendo de un debilitamiento en su poder político desde que María Cristina, la viuda del Rey, llega hasta el trono. En esa época los líderes conservadores y liberales defendían los principios de la monarquía absoluta.El argumento de la obra es sobre un personaje llamado Augusto Pérez cuya vida solitaria y tranquila se ve afectada por cuestiones amorosas y por las conversaciones que tiene con su amigo Víctor Goti, los cuales hacen que se comience a establecer un enfrentamiento de varios aspectos de su propia vida.Entre ellas se establece qué sentido tiene el amor, que es el vivir y que finalidad tiene la propia existencia. Todos estos pensamientos comienzan a consumir su vida, y aún más cuando su novia Eugenia huye con otro hombre. Él consigue consuelo en la muchacha que le plancha la ropa, la cual le jura quedarse con él por siempre y amarlo toda la vida.Cuando el ve que su vida no tiene una salida, busca la ayuda de Miguel de Unamuno y va hasta su casa, este es un conocido escritor español, que tiene la idea de lo que puede decirle sobre qué hacer con su vida. La obra da un giro inesperado cuando Unamuno le dice que él es su creador y que solo es un personaje de una novela de ficción, y que el mismo puede darle muerte cuando él quiera.El personaje de augusto comienza a defenderse y le dice que el personaje de novela es Unamuno y que ese ente acabara con el cuándo menos lo piense y hace una defensa de su existencia cuando dice que él puede volver a vivir siempre que alguien lea su historia, y que por el contrario Unamuno más nunca lo podrá hacer.Así de esta manera Miguel de Unamuno el escritor, hace una imagen de un encuentro con su creador al estilo de una relación de Dios y su criatura, haciendo de esta novel Niebla un tema mediante el cual se pueden desarrollar conceptos sobre cómo se puede concebir la vida y la forma de llevar a cabo nuestro propio destino.
