So, how did You Get Your nickname? Here's another book from the multi-talented author, photographer and poet, Ras Mykkal. His venture of putting his ideas into books is a new undertaking. His first book, "Click, I Got Yah!" is a collection of his sports images taken over the years while photographing local sporting events and the many sports personalities in Bermuda. Book Two, "Bermuda's Flying Flowers", is a book documenting the life cycle of Bermuda's butterflies, and thirdly, "Nicknames-How You Got your Nickname" shows that his subject matter and interest are wide-ranging.
Who would think that an everyday thing that we take for granted could be so interesting? Nicknames, a substitute name that becomes your identity; maybe because you are small or skinny; tall or stout. There are so many ways that a label could be pinned on you. It could be a feature about you or an event in your life. Ras Mykkal has found a phenomenal way to preserve the memories of the people of Bermuda in this novelty book; from well-known public figures to the common man in the streets.
There is also a brief history about names; forenames, surnames as well as common nicknames. The "Fun Facts" are just as fascinating, they will bring back memories of yester-year, and sure to fascinate the younger generation about old TV shows, cartoons and their characters, forgotten people and many events throughout history.
This book may not set the world on fire; it probably will not make a "best sellers" list beyond Bermuda, but it is informative, funny and a great read for passing time on a rainy day. As a Bermudian, I am sure you will recognize many people and It is a great keepsake for prosperity.
Inside you will find another important feature that should not be over looked; that is a wonderfully crafted relationship with a corporate company who have supported the production of this book, Butterfield & Vallis, a major importer of food into Bermuda. Their invaluable involvement is greatly appreciated.
Add it to your home library, enjoy.
