Wie können einer überwiegend analphabetischen Bevölkerung neue gesellschaftliche Inhalte und Werte vermittelt werden? In der jungen Sowjetunion (1919-1922) wurden dafür die nach der Russischen Telegrafenagentur ROSTA benannten Agitationsplakate verwendet. Diese in leerstehenden Schaufenstern aufgeklebten Plakate stellten eine Vorwegnahme des Comicgenres mit propagandistischen und aufklärerisch-erzieherischen Inhalten dar. Bunte, prägnante Bilder und kurze, gereimte Texte zogen die Betrachter in ihren Bann und faszinieren auch heute noch.
Die kommunikativen Möglichkeiten von ROSTA-Fenstern und ihre Ausdrucksstärke stehen im Zentrum dieser Studie. Welche Informationen können durch sie vermittelt werden? Welche Beziehungen gehen Bild und Text miteinander ein? Welche Vorzüge besitzt das für ROSTA-Fenster typische Zusammenspiel von Bild und Text gegenüber herkömmlichen Wandzeitungen?
Als theoretische Grundlage dient eine umfassende linguistische Analyse des semiotischen Systems Bild und seines Zusammenspiels mit Text.
