Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1,7, Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Am 4. März 1933 übernahm Franklin Delano Roosevelt das Amt des 32. Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Mit ihm endete die Präsidentschaft Hoovers und begann eine Ära wirtschafts- und sozialpolitischer Veränderungen in den USA. Wenige Wochen vor Roosevelt wurde in Deutschland Adolf Hitler von Reichspräsident Paul von Hindenburg zum Reichskanzler ernannt. Auch in Deutschland folgten in den kommenden Jahren Veränderungen, wenn auch von ganz anderer Natur. Dennoch hatten diese Veränderungen einen wechselseitigen Einfluss aufeinander. Ein Aspekt dieses wechselseitigen Einflusses waren die Flüchtlinge aus Deutschland und Europa, die in den USA Zuflucht suchten. "Während die amerikanische Öffentlichkeit den Flüchtlingen weitgehend skeptisch bis ablehnend gegenüberstand, sahen weiterblickende Intellektuelle 1933 die Chancen, die die deutschen refugee intellectuals boten. Dank der traditionellen Wertschätzung des deutschen Bildungssystems [...] suchten sie im Unterschied zu anderen Ländern diese geistigen Potentiale gezielt für die USA zu gewinnen. "Hitler is my best friend. He shakes the tree and I collect the apples" sagte Walter William Spencer Cook an der New York University und einer dieser Äpfel war Thomas Mann. Nach dessen Exil in der Schweiz emigrierte er schließlich 1938 in die USA. Dort beendete er die bereits 1926 begonnene Roman-Tetralogie "Joseph und seine Brüder", in der er sich augenscheinlich der Familiengeschichte des biblischen Jakob und dessen Lieblingssohn Joseph auseinandersetzt. Unter dem Einfluss zwei turbulenter Jahrzehnte der Weltgeschichte, die vier Bände entstanden zwischen 1926 und 1943, verarbeitete Thomas Mann jedoch auch zahlreiche persönliche Eindrücke, Meinungen und Ideen in seinem Werk. In dieser Arbeit werde ich die im vierten Buch "Joseph, der Ernährer" eingearbe
