Geschuldet ist dies wohl auch und vor allem den modernen (Kommunikations-)Technologien und den damit einhergehenden Veränderungen im menschlichen Kommunikationsverhalten. Medien und die sie ermöglichenden Technologien "katalysier[en] Veränderungen - Veränderungen in dem, was wir tun, und in unserer Denkweise" (Turkle 1984: 9). Ein solches Medium, das in einem nicht unerheblichen Zusammenhang mit diesen Veränderungen steht, ist das Internet - oder, um es korrekter auszudrücken: die einzelnen Medien, aus denen sich das Internet zusammensetzt. Das Internet ist in den vergangenen Jahren vermehrt aus seinem früheren Nischendasein herausgetreten und erreicht heute breite Bevölkerungsschichten. Diese Entwicklung wurde vor allem durch die benutzerfreundliche Hypermedialität des World Wide Web sowie "Web 2.0"-bezogene Tools (O'Reilly 2005: o.S.) begünstigt. Diese Veränderungen in der Wahrnehmung und Nutzung des Internets können nicht nur festgestellt, sondern auch bewertet werden. "Neben den ausdruckserweiternden und kreativitätsunterstützenden gibt es auch einschränkende und perspektivenverengende Momente, vor allem dort, wo man sich den Vorgaben des Mediums gedankenlos überlässt." (Schmitz 1995: 33) Allein deshalb scheint es gerechtfertigt, sich mit der Medien- bzw. Internetnutzung des Menschen differenzierter auseinanderzusetzen. Als Perspektive soll in der vorliegenden Arbeit die neurobiologische gewählt werden, die eine Untersuchung außerhalb der üblichen Diskussion zwischen verbohrter Technikphobie und der Weltsicht derer, die das Internet längst als unentbehrlichen Teil ihrer Existenz akzeptiert haben, erlaubt.
