Der tägliche Umgang mit dem WorldWideWeb und die dabei gewonnen Erfahrungen haben zu Kulturtechniken geführt, die im Rahmen der neuen Technologie und deren Möglichkeiten neu entstanden sind oder in diesen Rahmen übertragen wurden. Die unter dem Begriff Web 2.0 einhergehende und zunehmende Wandlung des Internetnutzers zum Internetmacher hat in den letzten drei Jahren eine gewaltige Bandbreite von Online-Portalen und Kommunikationsplattformen mit entsprechenden Zugriffszahlen und damit verbundenem ökonomischen Wert hervorgebracht. Die hier marktbeherrschenden Portale wie YouTube, MySpace oder die Plattform studiVZ verzeichnen explodierende Teilnehmerzahlen und werden auch als Quelle von kreativen Ideen seitens der Film-, TV- und Musikbranche genutzt. Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Online-Forschung (= AGOF) liefert mit den 'internet facts 2007-III' aktuelles Zahlenmaterial über die deutsche Online-Szene. Hier stieg das studiVZ von null auf Platz 22 des Rankings mit 3,45 Millionen Nutzern ein. Das bedeutet, dass 8,6 Prozent der deutschen Internetnutzer im dritten Quartal 2007 die Website besuchten. Die Nutzer des Web 2.0 können nicht nur Inhalte anschauen und lesen, sondern Eigenes erschaffen, sich austauschen, Querverweise zu anderen Inhalten herstellen oder Vorhandenes erweitern und korrigieren. Die Nutzer selbst gestalten den virtuellen Raum des Internets.
