About the Book

English summary: Olympia is located 19 km from the Ionian Sea at the confluence of the Kladeos and Alpheios rivers behind the narrow ridge at Flokas-Platanos. Since the 19th century, the holy sanctuary has been excavated from the position of the Olympic Terrace, which has an elevation of several meters and can be traced almost all the way down to the coastline. The so far unsolved mystery of Olympia being buried under layers of soil is therefore inextricably connected with the history of the river and landscape of the Kladeos and Alpheios valley. Andreas Vott presents current approaches to explain the sedimentary coverage of Olympia and discusses these in the light of new findings made in the scope of a research project on Olympia and its environment which was funded by the German Archaeological Institute and the local Antiquities Authority (Ephorie). With the help of a stratigraphic transect, Vott reveals that the lower Alpheios valley has been repeatedly flooded by tsunamis during the past 6000 years and which has resulted in his own 'Olympia tsunami hypothesis (OTH)'.
