Nessuna città d'Italia è più crepuscolare di Roma. Le relazioni fra il cenacolo romano di Sergio Corazzini e i simbolisti belgi propone un'analisi comparata (dal punto di vista semantico, lessicale, tematico e stilistico) fra i quattro principali animatori del cenacolo corazziniano (Corazzini, Martini, Marrone e Tarchiani) e i simbolisti belgi, in particolare Maeterlinck e Rodenbach, senza dimenticare Verhaeren, Gilkin, Elskamp e Van Lerberghe. Risulta esplicito, nella riflessione culturale dei principali esponenti della cerchia corazziniana, come sia necessario diventare «allievi» di una tradizione europea e come, nella ricerca di «maestri» che fornissero dignità e statuto letterario al gruppo, i simbolisti belgi, per affi nità di pensiero, atmosfere e linguaggio poetico, fossero stati individuati quali riferimenti principali. È attraverso la lettura delle loro opere che i membri del gruppo corazziniano maturano una visione «alternativa» di Roma, che se in parte risente anche delle descrizioni di altri scrittori italiani coevi, di fondo evidenzia una distanza dalle immagini classiche della capitale. Roma diviene così una città dell'anima, irreale ma al tempo stesso concreta, con le sue chiese di campagna, le sue vie che ne mostrano i lati non urbani, le visioni notturne di conventi che la fanno assomigliare alle città nordiche cantate dai simbolisti.
