Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2014 im Fachbereich Weltgeschichte - Frühgeschichte, Antike, Note: 1,7, Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (Historisches Institut), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Brände im antiken Rom waren zahlreich und nichts Ungewöhnliches. Beschäftigt man sich jedoch näher mit diesem Themenkomplex, stechen unweigerlich zwei Brände hervor. Der große Brand im Jahre 390 v. Chr., auch der 'Gallische Brand' genannt, laut Livius ausgelöst am 19. Juli im Zuge der Eroberung Roms durch eben jene Senonen, und der große Brand von 64 n. Chr., dessen Ursache seit über 2000 Jahren bis heute kontrovers diskutiert wird. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit letzterem unter der Regentschaft Kaiser Neros. Jener ist gleichsam der wohl bekannteste aller Stadtbrände Roms und wurde als solcher sowohl von Roman-autoren als auch von Filmregisseuren vielfach aufgegriffen. Der grausame Tyrann Nero, der Pyromane, die Inkarnation des Antichristen, der mutwillig seine Stadt anzündet, um Platz für seine megalomanen Bauvorhaben zu schaffen, und der anschließend, während Rom in Flammen steht, durch die apokalyptische Szenerie inspiriert, vergnügt zur Leier den Untergang Trojas besingt und anschließend den Christen die Schuld an dem Brand gibt, ist das gängige gesellschaftlich verankerte Bild Neros, welches für viele ein historisches Faktum darstellt. Was sich nun tatsächlich ereignete, ist sowohl in der antiken als auch in der modernen Forschung umstritten. Handelt es sich um Brandstiftung, oder ist der Brand zufällig ausgebrochen? Tacitus legt sich hier nicht eindeutig fest, er erwähnt, dass die ihm vorliegenden Quellen beide Standpunkte vertreten. Sueton und Cassius Dio vertreten deutlich nerofeindlichere Positionen. Die moderne Forschungsmeinung geht in drei Richtungen, wobei sich grundsätzlich die meisten von der Annahme antiker Historiker, Nero sei der Urheber des Brandes, distanzieren.
