Die Gültigkeit dieser Theorie wird unter Einbezug konsumsoziologischer Überlegungen anhand des Konsumverhaltens der Oberschicht im Bereich der Luxusgüter überprüft. Generell besagt die Trickle-Down-Theorie, dass wirtschaftliches Wachstum und große Vermögenskonzentrationen eine reiche Oberschicht zu Konsumausgaben und Investitionen befähigt, die wiederum zu einer Steigerung des Wohlstandes in den ärmeren Schichten führt. Daher seien steuerliche Entlastungen für vermögende Bevölkerungsgruppen sowie die Implementierung eines freien deregulierten Marktes notwendig, um die Produktivität der Oberschicht zu steigern. Diese erhöhte Produktivität führt zu einem Wohlstand, von dem alle Mitglieder einer Gesellschaft profitieren. Daher wird dem Konsum als Motor der Wirtschaft enorme Bedeutung zugeschrieben. Inhaltlich teilt sich diese Arbeit in drei Teile auf. In einem ersten Schritt werden die grundsätzlichen Annahmen der neoliberalen Ideologie mit Fokus auf die Trickle-Down-Theorie beleuchtet. Die sogenannte "Pferdeäpfel-Theorie" ist dabei in die zentralen ideologischen Charakteristika (wie etwa die Definition von Freiheit oder Gerechtigkeit) und daraus abgeleiteten Zielsetzungen (beispielsweise Abbau staatlicher Regulierung) eingebettet. Mit diesem Verständnis wird im zweiten Teil die Trickle-Down-Theorie konsumsoziologisch analysiert. Unter Einbezug der theoretischen Überlegungen von Wolfgang Fritz Haug, Werner Sombart, Pierre Bourdieu, Thorstein Veblen und Zygmunt Bauman zeigt sich, dass zentrale Annahmen wie etwa rationale Konsumentscheidungen entlang des Menschenbild des Homo Oeconomicus eine
