This handy little book of words recommends itself because it is convenient to carry about and because it has enough words to equip every youth with a fortune in word-coins to go out and exchange ideas with the greatest minds that have spoken in the English language or have had their words translated into it. If a boy (and what I say of the boy I would also of the girl) were to become acquainted with two new pages of words in this book every day (and with all the words which an average boy already knows at fourteen or fifteen, this ought not to be a difficult undertaking), each would have in a year such a'vocabulary as would enable him to make his very own nearly everything that a library contains - words not for hoarding but for investment in the best things that the long past has to give to us out of the billions upon billions of lives that have been lived upon this earth, and the best things that the present has to offer to us day by day out of the ex periences and hopes of the millions now living. Every day is the world made new, but only to those who are able to go into the market of each new day and buy the best that is the world around. Words are the coins of purchase in the pocket of the mind. Some of these words are more precious than coins; they are jewels ages old. The dictionary prevents the depreciation of words. It keeps them at their face value. So I commend this little book of words to every one who wants to go through life with the companionship of the greatest. And the best time to accumulate words is in youth. Once learned they are not forgotten till memory itself goes.
