About the Book

English summary: The obituary of the abbey of St Victor in Paris is not only of substantial importance for the history of this prominent royal abbey and its congregation, but also for the network of relationships established between the Capetian Dynasty and the nobility of the Ile-de-France. The integral edition of this obituary, composed in the 14th century and continued until the French Revolution, is published here for the first time. It gives us a general view of the structure of the order of St Victor and of the canons living within the motherhouse in Paris. In addition to the abbots, the priors and the claustral officers some 1033 canons and 153 lay brothers are named here -, and the donations pro anima provide us with an insight into the economy of the abbey. The obituary furnishes us with information about the citizens of Paris and the topography of the town as well as about the masters of the University, closely connected to the Victorine theological school - famous in the 12th century for thinkers and teachers such as Hugh and Richard of St. Victor. Accordingly it can be taken as a solid basis for further prosopographical and socio-historical studies.
