Naufragios y comentarios es un libro de viajes escrito por el conquistador español Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca.Esta obra, no muy conocida para el público general, es considerada capital en la literatura hispanoamericana del siglo XVI. Para empezar, hay que tener en cuenta que fue publicada sólo cincuenta años después del Descubrimiento de Colón, por lo que su valor histórico e historiográfico es indudable. Así mismo, es el primer libro que trata sobre el sur de Norteamérica la literatura de la época, así como la propia conquista, estaba más concentrada en Centroamérica y Sudamérica, por lo que su importancia etnográfica es incalculable. Sin embargo, la información recogida en el libro no debe serguirse a pie juntillas. 'Naufragios' no es un simple diario de viaje y mucho menos un ensayo; está impregnada de ficción de la primera página a la última. Y es que para entender la obra en su totalidad, primero debemos saber y comprender tanto las motivaciones como las intenciones de su autor. Con la narración de su odisea, Cabeza de Vaca pretendía ganarse el favor del rey Carlos I de España y V del Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico.En este libro, Cabeza de Vaca narra las vicisitudes de los cuatro únicos supervivientes de la expedición de Pánfilo de Narváez a Florida (1527), los cuales vivieron entre los indios durante ocho años como esclavos, comerciantes y curanderos, y atravesaron a pie el suroeste de los actuales Estados Unidos y norte de México hasta que en 1536 lograron volver al territorio bajo control español, la colonia de Nueva Galicia dentro del Virreinato de Nueva España.Según su autor y personaje principal los cuatro compañeros sufrieron mil y una calamidades durante su periplo, sobre todo en los primeros años. Tanto juntos como separados debieron soportar las inclemencias climatológicas del sureste norteamericano, pasando los duros y lluviosos inviernos en un permanente estado de inanición. De un modo u otro -no os quiero revelar la trama-, van pasando por diferentes poblaciones y tribus indígenas, viviendo en muchos casos prácticamente en calidad de esclavos. Con el tiempo y después de haberse adaptado a la vida aborigen y comprendido las costumbres y creencias de sus captores, Cabeza de Vaca consigue convertirse en una especie de curandero (en nombre de dios) que va adquiriendo cierta fama por la zona, situación que le ofrece la posibilidad de recuperar su libertad. Tras atravesar a pie el sur de Norteamérica de este a oeste, finalmente acabó en México, donde pudo contactar con expedicionarios españoles y volver a España en 1536.En el libro se recogen las primeras observaciones etnográficas sobre las poblaciones indígenas del golfo de México. También aparecen por primera vez en lengua castellana algunas palabras tomadas de las lenguas americanas. Se la considera la primera narración histórica sobre el territorio actual de los Estados Unidos. Fue publicada en 1542 en Zamora (España) y en una edición corregida y aumentada (con la adición del viaje del autor al Río de la Plata) 1555 en Valladolid.
