L'auteur est parti d'un constat: ce XXIème siècle nous convoque à répondre à deux exigences. D'une part que nous apprenions à situer la place de l'être humain dans la Nature. Et d'autre part que nous apprenions à recourir aux voies d'une Sagesse éprise d'une Paix véritable.
Existe-t-il une place singulière de l'être humain DANS LA NATURE ? Que savons-nous DE LA NATURE ? Que savons-nous de notre identité de sujet incarné, animé d'une vie propre ? Savons-nous entretenir avec la nature d'autres contacts que ceux d'un artifice ?
L'identité humaine procède-t-elle d'artificiels procédés, et n'est-elle qu'une affaire de narration dans une histoire ? Inachevée en notre nature humaine, l'expression de tout comportement de l'humanité, où notre condition se signifie, doit-elle vraiment s'arracher à la nature ?
Doit-elle s'en émanciper
Il semble urgent d'identifier la place de la nature, et le bienfait d'équilibres naturels, qu'il nous revient d'établir et de favoriser en nous-mêmes, comme dans nos milieux de vie.
Dans son Histoire naturelle de l'homme, le biologiste Pierre-Paul Grassé identifiait une distinction de plans:

" À la finalité biologique immanente, qui domine notre structure corporelle et nos fonctions organiques, se surajoute la finalité que crée notre volonté dans le champ de la liberté (...). Si l'on se souvient que l'homme, dès le départ de sa lignée, s'est éloigné de l'animal par la raison et par le coeur, comment ne pas s'inquiéter de la pression qui s'exerce avec une force croissante sur l'humanité pour la ramener à l'animalité, dans les fers des conduites innées, dont elle a mis tant de millénaires à se dégager (...) Si philosophie et science collaboraient loyalement, elles fourniraient à l'homme le moyen de mieux se gouverner ".

Nous avons voulu reprendre le fil de ce questionnement, et en expliciter une compréhension philosophique bénéfique à notre temps. L'animal-humanité y signifie une double appartenance du soi de notre vie: une appartenance et à la naturalité de notre organisme d'être vivant, et à la personnalité de notre humanité singulière, historiquement située. Il s'agissait de penser la culture et l'existence à la lumière d'une synthèse avertie de cette double dimension de la constitution humaine de la vie de soi: une vie éprise de valeurs de sagesse, en l'esprit de chacun.
