Der Begriff wurde von den Nationalsozialisten propagandistisch verwendet, um ihr Reich in die Kontinuität des Heiligen Römischen Reiches deutscher Nation, des ersten Reiches, und des Deutschen Kaiserreiches, des zweiten Reiches, zu stellen. Im Juli 1939 verbot das Propagandaministerium die weitere Verwendung des Begriffes "Drittes Reich", da Gegner des nationalsozialistischen Regimes den Ewigkeitsanspruch des Dritten Reiches in dem Begriff des "vierten Reiches" persifliert hatten. Die quasireligiöse Vorstellung eines Dritten Reiches als idealem Endzustand staatlicher Ordnung zog sich bereits seit dem Mittelalter wie ein roter Faden durch die europäische Geschichtsphilosophie. Hierbei wurde die Geschichte als Aufeinanderfolge dreier Zeitalter interpretiert: Auf das "Reich des Vaters" (des Gesetzes) sollte das "Reich des Sohnes" (des Evangeliums) und das "Reich des Heiligen Geistes" (der Liebe und Freiheit) folgen. Bedeutende Philosophen (Hegel, Schelling, Spengler) und Dichter (Lessing, Dostojewskij) griffen diese mythologische Vorstellung immer wieder auf. 1923 erschien "Das dritte Reich" von Arthur Moeller van den Bruck, in welchem dem Begriff erstmals eine direkt politische - und auch rassistische - Dimension verliehen wurde. Anfänglich griffen Hitler und seine Parteigenossen das in diesem Konglomerat von Vorstellungen enthaltene Pathos bereitwillig für ihre Propaganda auf. Mit zunehmender Abneigung der nationalsozialistischen Machthaber gegenüber religiösem Gedankengut verschwand der Begriff offiziell in der Versenkung. Der Zweite Weltkrieg war als
