Das Zeitalter des Nationalismus gehört angeblich der Vergangenheit an. Dennoch wehren sich die Mitgliedsstaaten der Europäischen Gemeinschaft dagegen, ihre Souveränität zugunsten eines künftigen Vereinten Europas aufzugeben. Viele Menschen empfinden die Globalisierung als Bedrohung ihrer nationalen Identität. Diese ist historisch gewachsen und manifestiert sich in unzähligen Details, deren Gesamtheit wir als Lebensstil erfahren: im Umgang miteinander, in der Art, wie wir Feste feiern, was und wie wir essen, welche Orte wir besuchen, welche Kleidung wir tragen und wie wir wohnen, vor allem aber darin, dass man an sie glaubt. Die Österreicher, die viele Jahrhunderte im Zentrum eines Reichs lebten, das den Nationalismus bekämpfte, glaubten vor 1918 nicht, dass sie eine Nation waren, vielmehr waren sie, wie Musil es ausdrückte, "zuerst und ursprünglich nichts". Nach dem Zusammenbruch der Habsburgermonarchie wurden sie gezwungen, sich eine nationale Identität im Schnellverfahren anzueignen. Sie taten sich damit sehr schwer. Die einen trauerten der untergegangenen Monarchie nach und fanden sich in der Gegenwart nicht zurecht, die anderen erstrebten den Anschluss an Deutschland, wobei dem Mythos des Volks große Bedeutung zukam. Ein weiterer zählebiger Mythos war der des Reichs, der sich sowohl auf das Reich der Habsburger als auch auf das Heilige Römische Reich bezog. Und dann gab es noch die Hoffnung auf ein zukünftiges Drittes Reich. Von diesen Mythen wurden die Österreicher durch die Katastrophe des Nationalsozialismus geheilt. Heute ist ihre Mehrheit davon überzeugt, dass sie eine nationale Identität hat. Diese ist eine junge Konstruktion, deren inhärente Brüche noch sichtbar sind. Am Beispiel Österreichs lässt sich daher die grundsätzliche Problematik nationaler Identität besonders gut aufzeigen. About the Author: Herbert Herzmann wurde in Wien geboren. Nach dem Abschluss des Studiums der Germanistik und Geschichte zog er zuerst nach Schottland und dann nach Irland, wo er Senior Lecturer in German am University College Dublin wurde. Er veröffentlichte zahlreiche Aufsätze über Literatur und Theater in Fachzeitschriften sowie einige Bücher. Vortragsreisen führten ihn in die USA und nach Südamerika. Als Bergsteiger besuchte er Ecuador, Tansania und die Alpen. Er lebt in Dublin und Wien. Seine Hobbies sind Reisen, Bergsteigen und Klettern. Herbert Herzmann was born in Vienna. After completing his studies of German literature and history in Vienna and Salzburg he moved first to Scotland and then to Ireland where he became a senior lecturer in German at University College Dublin. He published articles on literature and theatre and a few books. Lecturing tours brought him to the USA and South America. As a mountaineer he visited Ecuador, Tanzania and the Alps. He lives in Dublin and Vienna. His hobbies are travelling and mountaineering.
