About the Book

English summary: Is it possible for Christian organisations which are pursuing not solely altruistic goals but are providing paid services to maintain their identity? This is a critical question asked for 100 years, since Christian social service has acted as a service provider within a welfare state framework. So far the question could be dismissed. However, since the establishment of a social market, the public welfare system has been exposed to competition and its corollary, the necessity of self-assertion and of defending a market position. Customer satisfaction is considered an indicator for charity. Christian social service has to fulfil the very different demands of a diverse range of groups. The concept of "hybrid organisation" allows the integration of conflicting objectives, values and logics of action. The concept of civil society denotes the social place of a welfare-oriented competition. What are the new opportunities for Christian social service which derive from a combination of both of these concepts, and what are the risks? This book documents the relevant discourses of theology, and diaconical science, social science, jurisprudence and economics.
