Gerade deshalb ist es für uns von besonderer Bedeutung, zu wissen, inwieweit sie die Realität widerspiegeln. Denn die meisten Ereignisse erreichen uns nur durch die Massenmedien. "Die Massenmedien sollen so vollständig, sachlich und verständlich wie möglich informieren, damit die Staatsbürger in der Lage sind, mit kritischem Bewußtsein das öffentliche Geschehen zu verfolgen." Doch diesem hohen Anspruch an die Massenmedien steht die Tatsache entgegen, daß die Nachrichtenberichterstattung niemals auch nur im Entfernsten "umfassend" oder gar "vollständig" sein kann. Zum einen, weil die Presse u.a. über 99 % aller Ereignisse aufgrund ihrer begrenzten Möglichkeiten überhaupt nicht zur Kenntnis nehmen, bzw. nur einen Teil der Ereignisse mitteilen kann. Zum anderen, weil jeder Mensch die Realität anders zu interpretieren versteht. "Ereignisse werden erst dadurch zu Nachrichten, daß sie aus der Totalität und Komplexität des Geschehens ausgewählt werden." Nicht alle Ereignisse können die Medien als gleich wichtig behandeln, denn Nachrichten müssen eingeordnet und bewertet werden. Insbesondere in der Nachrichtenauswahl müssen Wertungsmechanismen existieren. Eine Nachricht ist, wie in einem journalistischen Lehrbuch beschrieben: "...die objektive Mitteilung eines allgemein interessierenden, aktuellen Sachverhalts in einem bestimmten journalen Aufbau."
