Unter Stakeholder werden Anspruchsgruppen verstanden, die Einfluss auf die Ziele des Unternehmens ausüben können (strategisch-instrumentelle Perspektive), oder die von Unternehmensaktivitäten betroffen sind (ethisch-normative Perspektive). Oftmals bilden Medien, Regierungsorganisationen und Nichtregierungsorganisationen, eine Art Wertelobby, die andere wichtige Stakeholder wie Kunden, Mitarbeiter oder Kapitalgeber für die jeweiligen Nachhaltigkeitsbelange sensibilisieren. Für Unternehmen resultieren daraus zahlreiche Chancen und Risiken. Die dazu führen, dass das Thema Nachhaltigkeit früher oder später für Unternehmen relevant wird.
