Il faut donc que l'ennemi soit coupable, et coupable des pires infamies pour lui imposer l'occupation de la Rhénanie et d'énormes indemnités de guerre. Alors, le boche doit se montrer cruel, criminel, chargé des pires défauts. Et pourquoi pas un zeste d'homosexualité pour compléter le tableau ! La peinture que Louis Dumur (écrivain suisse) porte sur la haute société militaire allemande correspond parfaitement aux mythes colportés par la propagande française avant-guerre. Le colonel von Steinitz, le lieutenant von Bückling, l'aspirant von Waldtkatzenbach appartiennent à la meilleure aristocratie prussienne. Mais ils sont aussi maniérés, élégants et lâches. Le colonel von Steinitz se cantonnait dans une réserve hautaine, dont il ne se départait qu'à l'égard du joli lieutenant von Bückling. Mais la faveur marquée qu'il lui témoignait ne procédait pas de sympathies d'ordre militaire, et les confidences dont il l'honorait n'avaient rien de stratégique . Mais loin d'être punie par la morale militaire, cette homosexualité des officiers allemands leur permet au contraire de la détourner à leur profit. C'est par l'entremise du lieutenant von Bückling qu'un officier criminel, le capitaine Koenig, obtient l'indulgence de son supérieur. L'homosexualité reste donc un facteur de désagrégation de la discipline, force principale des armées. Elle affaiblit nécessairement la valeur et le prestige des guerriers allemands. Le roman de Dumur, où la morale helvétique doit rester sauve, rapporte plus loin le châtiment reçu par von Bückling. Au cours d'une retraite, il est empalé par une baïonnette française. Toute déviation comporte sa propre ruine: la mort de l'homosexuel par où il a péché révèle-t-elle un fantasme personnel de l'auteur ? Louis Dumur, né à Genève en 1863 et mort le 28 mars 1933, est un romancier, poète et dramaturge suisse ayant vécu à Paris. Biographie Après avoir fondé la revue La Pléiade avec Édouard Dubus et George-Albert Aurier et Louis-Pilate de Brinn'Gaubast, il est avec Alfred Valette l'un des fondateurs du nouveau Mercure de France, dont il est rédacteur en chef en 1889 et secrétaire général en 1895. Sa signature autographe figure sur l'un des feuillets signés par les convives du banquet mémorable donné le 31 décembre 1916 en honneur d'Apollinaire à l'Ancien Palais d'Orléans de l'Avenue du Maine. Ses romans s'inscrivent dans la mouvance dite fin-de-siècle ou décadentisme. Après la Première Guerre mondiale, il se consacre à l'écriture de romans revanchards en rupture avec son souci esthétique antérieur.
