Warum also nicht gleich verhandeln?" Es ist nur wenige Jahre her, da galt allgemein die Annahme, dass, wenn Entscheidungen getroffen wurden, sie von "oben" getroffen wurden. Sei es durch den Vorgesetzten oder das Familienoberhaupt. Die Realität sah damals natürlich auch schon ganz anders aus. Aber dennoch ist in der heutigen Zeit das Verhandeln zu einem wichtigen Bestandteil des täglichen Lebens geworden. So werden heute Arbeitnehmer (oder auch Kinder) nicht mehr herumkommandiert, sondern die angestrebten Ziele werden ausgehandelt. Kompromisse werden eingegangen. Seit ein paar Jahren wird - vor allem im Berufsleben - immer mehr Wert auf die Fähigkeit gelegt, gut verhandeln zu können. Dazu werden unzählige Kurse von verschiedenen Institutionen angeboten, an welchen Arbeitnehmer und Führungskräfte teilnehmen müssen. Das ist auch gut so, denn es wird zunehmend wichtiger den richtigen Umgang mit Differenzen zu finden. Die Politik zeigt uns heute immer noch was passieren kann, wenn Differenzen nicht überbrückt werden können und zum Hindernis werden. Sanktionen, Aufstände und Kriege sind die Folge. Jedoch ist es nicht das Ziel Konflikte zu verhindern sondern, den richten Weg zu finden mit diesen umzugehen.
