La monumental obra México a Través de los Siglos, es el sesudo compendio del pensamiento liberal, de fines del siglo XIX, que buscó establecer de manera detallada las principales líneas de investigación histórica. Para ello se conformó un grupo de los más insignes historiadores de la época, quienes bajo la coordinación del general Vicente Riva Palacio, se lanzaron a la complicada tarea de organizar el conocimiento histórico de lo mexicano. La primera pregunta que uno debe hacerse es: ¿para un liberal del siglo XIX, cuáles son las fronteras de lo mexicano?, esto es, ¿dónde comienza México, cronológica y territorialmente? Esta interrogante será comenzada a desbrozar por Don Alfredo Chavero, quien busca en dos raíces los orígenes de lo mexicano: Por una parte el mundo nahoa, por otra el maya. Y eso le obliga a traspasar las fronteras del México de fines del siglo XIX, llegando hasta el valle del Ohio, por el norte, en la búsqueda de los misteriosos mound-builders, y hasta la mítica Copán por el Sur. Este primer desbroce de lo mexicano estará contenido en el primer libro del tomo primero. Aquí también se podrá observar una exhaustiva crítica histórica que bien podría encajar en las modernas tesis de grado, al lado de explicaciones fantásticas, que más que llevarnos a la sonrisa condescendiente nos permite comprender una forma de entender a los historiadores, al desarrollo científico y desde luego al México de fines del siglo XIX. El mundo nahoa que alcanza a perfilar Chavero comienza en las antiguas comunidades monoparentales del valle de Gila, para a partir de ahí extenderse en una pléyade de pueblos distintos, lo sorprendente de esta forma de explicar el mundo antiguo es que lo consigue sin tener a la mano las herramientas de los lingüistas modernos, si bien la especulación le lleva a fabricar respuestas fantásticas a la cuestión de su origen (quizá la más connotada es la presencia de Atlantes) en cambio es pormenorizada en torno a conceptos concretos como el desarrollo del calendario y su sistema de numeración. En tanto que el acercamiento con el mundo maya, quizá se muestre más complicado por el desconocimiento de muchos vestigios a los que nosotros ahora tenemos acceso, en forma de sitios arqueológicos, monolitos, etc. Sin embargo nos permite toparnos con un mundo arqueológico bajo un proceso de saqueo secular, que ve en el transcurso de pocas generaciones desaparecer incluso pirámides. En cuanto a la cuestión gráfica el presente texto ha procurado saldar los pocos espacios que la colección no había podido ilustrar, para lo cual se ha recurrido, al uso de imágenes, mapas y fotografías de diversas colecciones públicas así como algunas de manufactura propia. Sin embargo es obligación de los editores señalar el preciosismo con que los ilustradores originales trabajaron, muchos de sus grabados son auténticas obras de arte.
