Quel est ce comte Girart, appelé dans le poème seigneur de Roussillon L'histoire le connaît - elle '?ou bien l'imagination du poète a - t-elle tout créé, le per sonnage lui-mème avec ses faits et gestes Nos vieilles chroniques font mention d'un comte Girart qui vivait dans le pays d'avallon. Né sous le règne de Charlemagne, arrivé à l'âge d'homme sous Louis le Pieux, il se battit à Fontenai (sm). Plus tard, il joua un rôle politique. Dans un diplôme de Lothaire, daté de 853, il figure comme gouverneur de la partie de la Bourgogne qui appartenait à ce prince, et dans la quelle était située la cité de Lyon. Lothaire mort, Girart eut la garde de son troisième fils, roi de Pro vence. Les mèmes sources nous apprennent encore que sa femme se nommait Berte, qu'ils avaient de grands biens, et que, entre autres fondations pieuses, ils bâtirent les monastères de Pothieres et de Vézelai en Bourgogne. Voilà ce que l'histoire authentique nous apprend de la Vie du comte Girart. Mais c'est uniquement pour mémoire que je le rappelle; car le poète en tient si peu de compte, le héros légendaire qu'il nous présente s'éloigne si fort du type réel, que ce dernier est à peine reconnaissable. Mème le châ teau de Roussillon, situé, dans le poeme, sur le mont Laçois, d'où il dominait la rive de la Seine, non loin de _pothieres, n' a sans doute jama1s emsté. Quant au roi Charlcs, chronologiquement il ne saurait ètre que Charles le Chauve mais le poète le nomme si souvent Charles Martel, qu on ne peut douter qu 'une confusion se soit faite dans son esprit. Aucun de ceux qui sont familiers avec nos chansoris de geste ne s'en étonneraelles se distinguent pour la plupart par un oubli com plet de toutes les données de l'histoire. Dans celle qui nous occupe en particulier, le roi Charles n'est pas tel ou tel roi dont les annalistes ont raconté le règne c'est un roi féodal quelconque, brave, fier, implacable à tout vassal indocile de mème le comte Girart est un baron féodal, également brave, également fier, égale ment implacable à tout ce qu'il croit ètre une injus tice de la part de son suzerain. Ainsi roi et baron ap partiennent aussi peu que possible à l'histoire ce sont des types formés par la légende populaire et par l'ima gination d'un poète du xi1° siècle.
