La historia sucede en una región imaginaria, cuyos habitantes estaban siendo afectados por una terrible pandemia, "la Muerte Roja", que se caracterizaba, aparte de por la velocidad con la que infectaba a las víctimas, por la gran cantidad de sangre que perdían los que la sufrían. Pero esto no le importaba mucho al príncipe Próspero, gobernador de este reino, quien decidió refugiarse, con sus amigos y cortesanos en una abadía fortificada. Aislados y ajenos a lo que ocurría en el mundo exterior, Próspero abasteció a la abadía con todo tipo de diversiones, desde bufones, músicos y bailarines a abundante comida y vino. Tras seis meses de aislamiento, Próspero decidió organizar un baile de máscaras en su extravagante abadía. Hizo uso de los siete salones en hilera de los que dispone el recinto, sólo que, a diferencia de lo que ocurre en los palacios, en los que los salones constituyen largas perspectivas en línea recta, dejando que la mirada atraviese sin obstáculo todas las estancias hasta el fondo cuando las puertas están abiertas, las de la abadía estaban colocadas de una manera irregular, pudiéndose ver sólo una sala cada vez, sin perspectiva. Estos salones tenían dos ventanas góticas a los lados con vidrieras de color que armonizaban con el color dominante de la sala: el primero tenía vidrieras de un azul vivo y la decoración de la sala también lo era, las del segundo eran púrpuras, la sala también, el tercero era verde, el cuarto naranja, el quinto blanco y el sexto violeta. A esto se añadía que los salones no tenían luz natural, sino que estaban iluminados por unos braseros colocados justo delante de las ventanas. La norma se interrumpía con el séptimo, forrado con telas negras cuyas ventanas eran de un color rojo escarlata. La iluminación y la combinación de los colores en este salón creaban unas sombras fantásticas y siniestras, tanto que nadie se atrevía a entrar en el cuando caía la noche. L'histoire se situe dans une abbaye fortifiée, dans laquelle le prince Prospero s'est enfermé, avec mille de ses courtisans, afin de fuir l'épidémie foudroyante de Mort Rouge, terrible fléau qui frappe le pays. Indifférent aux malheurs des populations frappées par la maladie, ils mènent alors une vie parsemée de vices et de plaisirs en toute sécurité derrière les murs de l'abbaye. Une nuit, Prospero organise un bal masqué dans sept pièces de l'abbaye, décorées et illuminée chacune d'une couleur différente: bleu, pourpre, vert, orange, blanc, violet. La dernière est tapissée de noir et éclairée par une lumière rouge sang. Elle inspire une si grande crainte aux invités que rares sont ceux qui osent s'y aventurer. Il s'y trouve une grande horloge d'ébène qui sonne sinistrement à chaque heure; alors, chacun arrête de parler et l'orchestre cesse de jouer. Durant la soirée, Prospero remarque une figure dans une robe qui ressemble à un linceul, avec un masque semblable au crâne dépeignant une victime de la Mort Rouge. Se sentant gravement insulté, Prospero exige qu'on lui donne l'identité de l'invité mystérieux et ordonne également que l'on s'empare de l'individu. Mais, comme nul n'ose obéir, il tire un poignard et le poursuit à travers les sept pièces. Quand il arrive dans la septième pièce, le mystérieux personnage se retourne et fait face à Prospero, qui s'effondre, mort. Les courtisans, horrifiés et furieux, se jettent sur l'inconnu et lui arrachent son masque, mais découvrent que le costume est vide. Tous comprennent qu'il s'agit de la Mort Rouge elle-même et ils meurent les uns après les autres. Les sols des chambres sont remplis de sang et l'horloge s'arrête de sonner.
