Mark lives in two worlds. In one his family moves him in the middle of his freshman year to a new school. Mark has no friends and is taunted by bullies as the newbee. He senses his troubles are just starting and that one day he will have to face up. Pug won't let him alone. He sees an ivory carving of a polar bear on the bookshelf and picks it up, The bear grows cold in his hand and Mark realizes he is no longer in the study but standing in a dense forest somewhere in central Alaska. He turns quickly when he hears the angry growl of a huge grizzly not twenty feet away. The bear's claws reflect in the flickering light as Mark reaches for... This is a glimpse of one of many adventures Mark faces each time he holds the ivory bear. In others he joins Inuit seal hunters in the dense fog on Bristol Bay, is attacked by a polar bear on the Arctic ice pack and is stranded and alone on what some say is a haunted island in the Aleutian chain of southern Alaska. About the Author: R.A. Lamb was sent to Northern Alaska by his company as an exploration geologist to study mountain ranges in the Arctic. He did live in a tent camp, fly by helicopter to the mountaintops he was studying and make his way to the valley floor to meet his chopper to fly again another day. He saw bears, caribou and golden eagles to mention a few, meet many Alaskan natives including one in a sod hut on an Arctic peninsula where he made a trade for the Ivory Bear. The episodes and characters in this book are fictional, however, the settings are based on personal experiences. Not only has he set foot in every place depicted but during his youth he also changed schools several times, faced bullies and had to face up. R.A. writes mostly YA and Middle Grade adventure stories although has written several picture books for younger children. He strives to supply sufficient description to let you the reader feel you are in the midst of the fantasy as it unfolds, but beware, not all paths are predictable. What's the fun of living in the story if everything leads to the obvious. He and his wife live in the Woodlands, Texas near Houston and in his spare time can be found on the golf course or at his lake house either fishing or in a swing on the porch watching the sail boats in the marina.
