About the Book

A true and honest story of the struggles of growing up with alcoholic parents. All around the world this ugly disease affects so many peoples lives. This addiction is often hidden away whilst the children of the alcoholic parents often feel ashamed, embarrassed and a sense of abandonment. Now I can make sense of why I have certain traits in my adulthood ............................................. MY STORYI had just got back from school which was always a scary event. My heart would race as I would slowly open the back door and just listen? I was scanning the house to check if my mum was still in bed? Was she drunk? Was she entertaining a man in her bedroom? Had she gone out? Mums priorities had changed, and it soon became clear that at times she had to make the decision whether to feed her five children or feed her alcohol addiction. The hunger was painful, especially at night, I lay fantasising about food. This gave me the drive to become an entrepreneur in my own right as I casually walked out of a shop with a frozen joint of meat tucked under my armpit; it was an unusual place to get frostbite on my tit; but it was survival. In the darkness of being invisible to the world, I was trying to survive the chaos and unpredictable behaviour of my drunken parents. Hidden behind the net curtains was my arsehole dad, an uncaring drunk whose hands were not just for picking up his drink! Those fag stained fingers, often twitching for some action. My mum's behaviour was more erratic and riskier as she was getting further in trouble. Robbing a post office and running off with a captain of a ship, her life was fuelled by drink and drama. In amongst the chaos are dark humour moments that are funny and surreal. Mum telephoned the police whilst drunk and said, "I have just woken up and my Fanny is missing". The operator asked mum when she had last seen it? Mum replied, "last night and it was ok as I stroked it and it was clucking happily". The police officer arrived ............................. Captured, my mum was made a prisoner for over forty years of alcohol abuse and so was her family. But throughout the craziness I always had one ambition in life that I dreamt about, over and over, but could it ever be achieved ................................I know there are thousands of you out there, always feeling alone, sad and abandoned due to having an alcoholic family member, now you know you are not alone.
