En entrant dans le Musée Van Gogh, vous vous retrouverez face à une demi-douzaine d'auto-portraits exposés sur fond multicolore, composé d'agrandissements de ces mêmes toiles. La présentation laisse beaucoup d'espace entre les oeuvres, et la couleur des murs varie au gré des périodes: vert-brun pour les premiers dessins et tableaux du Brabant, vert-bleu pour les peintures parisiennes, un bleu plus profond et plus riche pour ses oeuvres provençales éblouissantes et des verts et bleus plus subtils pour ses autres toiles. À cause de la fragilité des travaux sur papier, on expose une sélection changeante de seulement dix dessins.

Les thèmes les plus importants y sont abordés, tels que l'incident de l'oreille, le suicide et la maladie mentale, la mort et la reconnaissance, la décoloration des peintures et les origines du Musée Van Gogh. En fin de parcours, à l'étage supérieur du bâtiment, se trouve une galerie où sont exposées les oeuvres des disciples de Van Gogh.

Bien que la présentation soit en essence chronologique, le corpus artistique a été arrangé selon des thèmes bien précis pour que le visiteur puisse suivre la recherche sans relâche d'un artiste extraordinaire.

Puisque Vincent Van Gogh et son frère Theo collectionnaient les oeuvres de leurs contemporains, celles-ci ont aussi leur place au sein du musée. Le livre contient de nombreuses reproductions de Seurat, de Pissarro, de Toulouse-Lautrec, de Gauguin et de Bernard, de leurs prédécesseurs tels que Millet et Breton, et d'artistes qui ont suivi les traces de Van Gogh. Vous découvrirez ainsi le contexte, et l'impact que Van Gogh a eu sur l'art moderne.
