Il n'avait que trois ans lorsqu'il perdit son père Jean le Maingre, maréchal de France, nommé le brave, et par esbatement, dit la chronique, Bouca'qua'ut, nom qu'une gloire héréditaire rendit pâtronimique. A douze ans, le jeune Boucicaut guer10ya1t sous le connétable Duguesclin et les ducs de Bourbon et de Bourgogne. Sa bonne mine et sa valeur l'avaient déjà mis en renom lorsqu'il fut fait chevalier. Nouveau David, il trouva son Goliath a la bataille de Rosebecque, et grand bruit fut de Cette passe d'armes isolée. En Prusse, il soutint l'honneur de la chevale1ie française contre les peuples barbares qui habitaient la Lithuanie, et que l'ignorance de ce temps confondait sous le nom de 5ar1asins. A son retour, il suivit dans le Poitou et dans la Guienne le duc de Bourbon, qui le fit son lieutenant. Mais les victoires dont chacun prend sa part ne lui suffisaient pas, et dans les entr'actes il se faisait la main en combattant corps à corps Pierre de Courtenay, Thomas Clifford et autres champions non moins renommés. Charles VI le fit capitaine de cent hommes d' armes, et bientôt après maréchal de France, a âge de vingt - cinq ans. Après la bataille de Nicopolis, 25 septembre 1396, c'en était fait de lui, lorsque le comte de Nevers (jean - sans- -peur, depuis duc de Bourgogne) prit à douleun la mort de si vaillant homme, si l'advisa Dieu tout soudainement de joindre les deux doigts ensemble de ses deux mains en regardant Bajazet, et fist signe que Boucicaut lui étoit comme son propre frère et qu'il le respectast: lequel .
