Sie gilt somit als Erfahrungsmedium. Gleichzeitig kann Musik aber auch kommunizieren und ist somit Kommunikationsmedium. Spätestens seit Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts mit Beginn der Popmusik hat sich eine Popkultur entwickelt, die viel mehr umfasst als nur das Erleben von Musik. Es wurden ganze Lebensgefühle, Einstellungen und (Abgrenzungs)kulturen gebildet. Musik legt den Grundstein und ist nicht nur Begleitung, sondern aktiver Part inmitten von Bewegungen wie die der 68er, der Hippies oder Punks. Somit sind Musikkulturen von gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen nicht zu trennen. Musiker können mit ihren Inhalten, Menschen erreichen und bewusst Botschaften transportieren. In dieser Arbeit soll es deshalb um die gesellschaftskritische Relevanz von Musikkultur gehen. Inwiefern fungiert Musikkultur als Kommunikationsmedium für Gesellschaftskritik? Werden durch Popkultur gesellschaftskritische Themen angestoßen und diskutiert? Neben der gesellschaftskritischen Relevanz von Popkultur allgemein, wird sich die Arbeit auf die Subkultur HipHop in Deutschland spezialisieren. In keinem anderen Musikgenre wird so viel Wert auf den Inhalt und die Texte der Songs gelegt. In den letzten Jahren konnten auch immer mehr Rapper mit explizit politischen und gesellschaftskritischen Inhalten Erfolge in den Charts vorweisen. Die gesellschaftskritische Relevanz von Popkultur allgemein und deutschem HipHop im Speziellen wird somit in dieser Arbeit untersucht.
