Kunst war Widerstand im tiefsten Sinne dieses Wortes, sie war Widerstand gegen den Untergang in die Barbarei." So beschreibt Wilhelm Girnus in der Einleitung für eine 1979 durchgeführte Tagung die Rolle der Kunst und damit auch die Rolle der Musik in den faschistischen Konzentrationslagern - Kunst als Widerstand gegen Grausamkeit, Unmenschlichkeit und Barbarei. Die KZ waren sicherlich die grausamsten Orte, an denen Menschen im 20. Jahrhundert lebten, sofern sie überhaupt längere Zeit überlebt haben. Dass an diesen Orten des Grauens musiziert oder generell Kunst betrieben wurde, ist für uns heute kaum oder nur sehr schwer nachvollziehbar. Immer wieder habe ich mich gefragt, ob, in welchem Umfang und zu welchem Zweck in den nationalsozialistischen Lagern musiziert worden ist und was den Menschen die Musik in ihrem ansonsten so grausamen Alltag bedeutet haben könnte. Hat die Kunst die Häftlinge von den äußeren Lebensumständen abgelenkt? War Musikmachen die Flucht in eine andere und bessere Welt? Konnten Menschen mit Hilfe der Musik, die durch die Nazis und vor allem durch den Missbrauch in deren Lagern "ihre Unschuld verloren" hatte, neue Kraft und neuen Überlebenswillen finden? Die bedeutendste Frage, die sich in Zusammenhang mit den Funktionen von Musik in Konzentrationslagern stellt und die auch in dieser Arbeit im Mittelpunkt stehen soll, ist die, ob Musik für die Inhaftierten eine Form des Widerstandes gegen die Nazis darstellen konnte und wenn ja, um welche Formen von Widerstand es sich handelte.
