Catalina la Grande llegó al poder en plena Ilustración, que estaba floreciendo en Francia y Gran Bretaña, y gobernaría como una gobernante ilustrada. Catalina, conocida correspondiente de Voltaire, buscó modernizar a Rusia y convertirla en una fuerza por derecho propio, creando a la vez una corte rica y culta. En el transcurso de sus casi 35 años en el poder, Catalina marcó el comienzo de la Ilustración rusa y presidió durante un periodo de tiempo conocido como la Edad de Oro del Imperio ruso.
