The author was inspired to write 'Mum, Where is Your Hair?' based on a heart-breaking discussion with her 8-year-old niece. Children at her niece's school bully and taunt her, saying that she is "diseased and contagious". The children do not understand why her niece has no hair, and her 8-year-old niece does not understand why children do not want to be her friend. These experiences are not unlike those personally experienced by the author, who has alopecia, and thousands of other people who also suffer from hair loss.
'Mum, Where is Your Hair?' attempts to help change societies view about hair loss. Losing your hair can be difficult and have negative impacts on confidence and self-esteem. Providing support in the community and building awareness about hair loss, whether from alopecia, cancer/chemotherapy, or other health-related factors, has the ability to make it so much easier for those dealing with hair loss. HairandNowGlobal is actively educating communities about hair loss, removing confusion, fear and improve the self-esteem and comfort of those with hair loss by positively impacting the way society understands diversity.
'Mum, Where is Your Hair?' is a perfect gift to help support family or friends with hair loss from alopecia, cancer patients undergoing chemo, or any other hair loss related factors. It is also an effective story for schools to read aloud in support of children or families dealing with hair loss to help those with hair loss feel more comfortable and confident in the community and reduce school children bullying. This is the first story in a series of stories by HairandNowGlobal, with the focus on a kid's confusion about their mother's hair loss.
HairandNowGlobal is set up to provide hairloss knowledge, support, and awareness.
