(Eduard Kaeser) Multikulturalismus ist heute medial und politisch omniprasent. Werte-Pluralisten stehen den Bewahrern westlicher Werte gegenuber, die diese vorzugsweise gegen islamische zu verteidigen suchen; Analysen von Konflikten zwischen Kulturen rangieren spatestens seit Huntingtons Clash of Civilisations hoch in der Okonomie publizistischer Aufmerksamkeit. Doch was ist eigentlich Multikulturalismus? Eduard Kaeser nimmt in seinem Essay den Multikulturalismus noch einmal unter die Lupe und stellt Fragen: Was heisst uberhaupt Kultur, wenn heute von Kultur in so unterschiedlichen Bedeutungen gesprochen wird wie der ostlichen und westlichen Kultur, der Wissenskultur, der Kultur der Gewalt, aber auch der Kultur von Fanclubs und Gangs? Wo ist der Multikulturalismus zu verorten zwischen Realitat und Ideologie? Welche Hindernisse stehen dem friedlichen Zusammenleben von Menschen mit unterschiedlichem kulturellem Hintergrund im Wege und wie konnen diese uberwunden werden? Und ist es in einer Welt mit so unterschiedlichen Traditionen, Sitten und Gebrauchen uberhaupt moglich, universelle Werte wie Menschenrechte zu begrunden und zu verteidigen? Eduard Kaesers Essay ist ein Pladoyer fur eine sakular-liberale Sicht des Menschen und des Staates, mit den Menschenrechten als universalistischem Kern. Kaeser vergisst indes weder die kulturelle Vielfalt der Welt und der modernen westlichen Gesellschaften noch die kulturelle Verwurzelung der Menschen. Der Mensch ist ein lokales Wesen: Das meiste, was wir tun und lassen, ist gepragt von lokaler Sitte. Sie sitzt uns tief unter der Haut. Wenn sich Menschen begegnen, begegnen sich immer auch Sitten und Brauche, also Normen im weitesten Sinn. Fast alles, was wir tun und lassen, ist durchsetzt von solchen impliziten und expliziten Normen, die dazu neigen, miteinander zu kollidieren. Es ist anspruchsvoll, fremde und zum Teil auch befremdende Sitten, Brauche und Traditionen wirklich zu verstehen und anzuerkennen. Das andern auch die makellosesten rationalen Argumente nicht. Der Universalismus beginnt fur Kaeser ganz unten, abseits vom Larm um Leitkultur. Vielleicht ist die Zeit reif, den Versuch einer Neudefinition des Universalismus zu wagen, und zwar nicht von oben, aus der Sicht von allgemeinen, allen einleuchtenden Prinzipien, sondern von unten, aus der alltaglichen Praxis von Menschen in heutigen heterogenen Gesellschaften, von Menschen, die immer schon interkulturell miteinander zu tun haben.
About the Author: Eduard Kaeser, geboren 1948 in Bern, ist Physiker und promovierter Philosoph. Zunachst Assistent am Philosophischen Seminar Bern, war er anschliessend Mitarbeiter der interfakultaren Koordinationsstelle fur Allgemeine Okologie in Bern. Eduard Kaeser ist heute Gymnasiallehrer fur Physik und Mathematik. Daneben ist er als freier Publizist tatig, unter anderem fur den Tages-Anzeiger, die Neue Zurcher Zeitung und den Berner Bund.
