About the Book

Through an analysis of culturally specific constructions of gender and spirituality in the verbal and visual texts, this study reveals syncretic presences and a new paradigm for reading. Furthermore, this project argues that these women create and install cultural citizenship, which proposes alternatives to postcolonial and global feminist paradigms. The first chapter examines selected writings by Paula Gunn Allen and Leslie Marmon Silk; their treatment of twins and two-spirit people reinstates more inclusive - but not limited to gynocratic - gender traditions. Chapter 2 of this title revisits the fiction, poetry, and theory of several Chicana 'authors' who highlight and, at times, reinvent the relationships of three Latina icons to their community: Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Virgin of Guadalupe, and La Malinche. As an image-maker, the santera, or female saint-maker in the Southwest, plays a vital role in iconographic representations. A cross over into visual text continues in Chapter 3 where Julie Dash's film Daughters of the Dust, and Toni Morrison's Beloved innovatively reinstate Africanisms through the textual abiku. The final chapter examines Haitian voudou and the relationship between mothers and daughters - particularly imposed exiles - in the works of Edwidge Danticat and Myriam Chancy.
