Nel catalogo delle opere di Mozart da lui stesso redatto (Werkverzeichnis) compare, nel mese di luglio del 1785, la composizione di una Musica Funebre Massonica (Maurerische Trauermusik) per la scomparsa di due fratelli massoni, il duca August von Mecklenburg-Strelitz e il conte Franz Esterházy von Galántha, le cui morti però avvennero rispettivamente il 6 ed il 7 novembre successivo. La evidente contraddizione tra le due date è il risultato di un errore commesso dal compositore nel senso di un'errata postdatazione? Tra i più grandi musicologi del '900 prevale la tesi, corredata in ognuno da notizie argomentate secondo indagini musicologiche e storiche, che si tratti di un errore di Mozart, il quale avrebbe appunto scritto questa composizione in novembre per quella specifica circostanza, ma l'avrebbe catalogata erroneamente sotto il mese di luglio perché, dal momento che la dedica del Werkverzeichnis fa supporre una sua esecuzione per quei decessi, doveva essere quella la sua finalità; e comunque, al riguardo, non esistono documenti o protocolli di loggia che ne comprovino la sua effettiva esecuzione per quell'avvenimento. Verso la fine del '900, nella visione e nella lettura di questa musica sotto un'ottica specificatamente massonica, si è giunti all'ulteriore ipotesi che essa sia stata invece scritta inizialmente per la cerimonia di elevazione al 3° grado di Karl von König, svoltasi a Vienna il 12 agosto del 1785 nella loggia Zur Wahren Eintracht, ed in più con la partecipazione di un coro amatoriale di fratelli massoni, quindi una musica "per maestri," e successivamente riutilizzata per le commemorazioni dei due massoni deceduti a novembre: la prima, il 17 di quel mese per il solo Esterházy con la versione strumentale originale come da Werkverzeichnis, la seconda, per il Mecklenburg-Strelitz il 7 dicembre, con una versione ampliata di due corni di bassetto e un controfagotto.Considerata la mancanza di fonti sicure, ad eccezione del catalogo e della partitura (che reca chiaramente l'aggiunta dei tre strumenti supplementari, ma il cui titolo è semplicemente Trauermusik, cioè musica funebre), di per sé l'idea di un'errata datazione di Mozart non dovrebbe suscitare grandi problematiche, poiché si tratterebbe di un semplice sbaglio. Invece, spostando l'indagine su piani critici diversi, si comprende come, anche in questo caso, le ipotesi elaborate testimonino quanto l'esercizio critico, spesso, tenda ad esprimersi in maniera quasi meccanica sulla scia di ricerche accolte sin dall'inizio come vere e assolute, radicandosi nel tempo quali verità pressoché incontrovertibili e indubitabili. In questo saggio, oltre alla ricognizione delle tappe fondamentali della musicologia riguardante la Maurerische Trauermusik, si compie un'analisi della partitura autografa, del Werkverzeichnis, lanciando ipotesi sui possibili esecutori dell'opera e sulla sua plausibile tarda catalogazione. Segue un'approfondita digressione storica sulla realtà delle varie associazioni segrete che orbitavano a Vienna (particolarmente dei Rosacroce d'Oro, degli Illuminati di Baviera e dei Fratelli Asiatici) con riferimento specifico ai dieci anni in cui Mozart visse nella capitale asburgica (1781-1791), tentando di evidenziare aspetti della personalità del compositore proprio in relazione alla sua appartenenza massonica.
