O propósito do livro Morte, finitude e razões para viver feliz é apresentar e analisar questões filosóficas acerca da morte e do processo de morrer, da condição existencial exclusivamente humana da finitude e da arte de viver bem, com tranquilidade e galhardia, que é ser feliz, o objetivo supremo da pessoa humana, tese defendida pelas éticas teleológicas antigas e medievais.
No mundo grego, os fundamentos do agir humano estavam ancorados no mundo da physis, da natureza. Essa visão de mundo é estranha ao mundo atual, mergulhado nos parâmetros da tecnociência e voltados ao mundo das coisas, legitimada pelo Estado, pelo mercado, isto é, pela razão reguladora do capitalismo globalizado e pela razão instrumental. A epocalidade histórica ou a pós-modernidade rege-se por estes princípios e estas instituições. Logo, praticamente não há espaço para discussões como uma racionalidade ancorada no mundo da physis e sobre a condição existencial da morte.
A tese de fundo que perpassava as discussões dos intelectuais da época grega, de origem socrática, consistia no seguinte: aprender a morrer era aprender a viver. Quem se interessava a filosofar sobre a morte, questão restrita mais a área da ética, era capaz de enfrentá-la com mais serenidade, mesmo diante de sua iminência, como é o caso da morte de Sócrates. Para quem quisesse alcançar uma vida feliz, a eudaimonía, a vida bem-sucedida, era necessário aprender a encarar a finitude, a contingência e a morte por meio da razão, da filosofia. Cabe ao filósofo, o amante da sabedoria, não temer a morte, mas desejá-la, porque a verdadeira filosofia consiste na preparação para a morte.
Ainda, para Sêneca, só consegue aceitar a morte iminente quem conseguiu, no decorrer de sua existência, estudar, refletir e dialogar sobre a morte e o processo de morrer. Essa postura e deliberação frente à finitude é algo próprio do sábio. Quem consegue se preparar voluntariamente perante as circunstâncias da vida e da morte, o fim não é amargo, porque "a preparação para a morte tem prioridade sobre a preparação para a vida" (SÊNECA, 2004, p. 218). Quem consegue aceitar a morte como condição existencial natural está aprendendo a viver. Essa é a tese clássica engendrada desde Sócrates, reafirmada por Cícero e seguida, inclusive na prática, por Sêneca.
Assim, as razões para viver, a busca da felicidade individual e coletiva das pessoas idosas foram e são construídas e legitimadas, de acordo com o caldo cultural, com a formação que receberam de suas instituições, principalmente pela família, escola, igreja, estado, mídia e mercado. Por isso, é possível deduzir e afirmar que a pessoa é o que foi, sendo sua vida um resultado de escolhas conscientes e inconscientes, de acordo com o paradigma de cada época. Logicamente, as múltiplas patologias, principalmente a degenerativas crônicas, por serem adquiridas, como a hipertensão, a depressão etc., podem ser enquadradas nessa ótica.
Para isso, organizamos o livro em cinco capítulos. No primeiro, aborda-se O sentido soteriológico da morte em Aristóteles; no segundo, sobre O destemor da morte em Epicuro; no terceiro, descreve-se O estoicismo, finitude e brevidade da vida; no quarto, a Morte e finitude na percepção de um grupo de idosos e, no último, destaca-se as Razões da felicidade na percepção de idosos.
