John wurde im September 2000 in Arlington Heights in den USA geboren. Als er achtzehn Monate alt war, entwickelte er plötzlich epileptische Anfälle und wurde in ein Krankenhaus eingewiesen. Sein Gitterbett hatte gepolsterte Stäbe, war nach oben hin verschlossen, ein Käfig. Über eine Klammer an seinem großen Zeh führte ein Kabel zu einem Monitor, 126/96 war darauf in roten Digitalziffern zu lesen. Unser vorher fröhliches, starkes und neugieriges Kind lag schwach in diesem Käfigbett, tief erschöpft von Medikamenten, Untersuchungen und Krampfanfällen.

In den folgenden Monaten stellte sich heraus, dass John nicht nur eine therapieresistente Epilepsie hatte, sondern auch eine Stoffwechselstörung und Autismus. Chronisch krank und schwerstbehindert. Dieses Buch erzählt von John, vom Elternsein unter verschärften Voraussetzungen, von schönen und schwierigen Zeiten, von unseren Reisen mit John und von den vielen Fragen, die unser Leben mit ihm begleiteten. Wie können wir John verstehen, wenn er nicht sprechen kann? Treffen wir die richtigen Entscheidungen für ihn? Was braucht er und was braucht er gerade nicht? Und was bedeutet sein Autismus überhaupt wirklich?

Autisten sind nicht als Weltenbummler bekannt. Sie mögen Routinen und eine gewohnte Umgebung, so eine verbreitete Vorstellung vom Autismus. Doch John verreiste gerne und im Leben mit ihm empfanden wir viele gängige Vorstellungen über den Autismus, wie auch über das Leben mit einem behinderten Kind, als zu kurz gedacht. Jedes Kapitel des Buches nähert sich dem Autismus aus einer anderen Perspektive, um dessen Tiefe und Facettenreichtum besser zu verstehen. Dabei geht es um Themen wie Therapien, Sprache, Neurodiversität, den Anstieg an Diagnosen, Ethik, Autismuskultur, Geschichte, Inklusion und Freundschaft.

Auf manche Fragen haben wir Antworten gefunden, auf andere nicht. Vieles wird ungeklärt bleiben, denn John ist im Alter von fünfzehn Jahren im März 2016 plötzlich und unerwartet im Schlaf gestorben.
About the Author: Monika Scheele Knight, geboren 1972 in Oldenburg. Studium in Mainz, Montpellier, Berlin und New York: Allgemeine und Vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft, Theaterwissenschaft und Nordamerikastudien. Arbeitet seit 2006 freiberuflich als Referentin, Reiseleiterin und Übersetzerin in Berlin.
